English as an additional language
Information for parents and carers for whom English is an additional language
I am Mrs Tagima and as many of you know I have worked at Cherrywood for a few years in Reception class.
I will continue to work with children in the classroom environment but am delighted to say I have taken over the role of English as an additional language leader, something I am very passionate about.
My key aims are to
- ensure pupils joining our school who speak another language settle in well;
- foster enjoyment and engagement in learning;
- establish a dynamic and positive learning environment;
- lead and embed a school ethos that celebrates and reflects individuality and cultural difference.
It is a wonderful thing that we have a school with many different nationalities and we need to celebrate and embrace this.
Some of the exciting things I am working on at the moment are to introduce a ‘One World’ day where we will celebrate all our varied cultures. This will be in the summer term and I will be sending out more details about this nearer the time.
I am also in the process of starting up a ‘Young Interpreters’ group.
The young Interpreter scheme recognises the huge potential; that exists within each school community for pupils of all ages to use their skills and knowledge to support others in the school to feel safe, settled and valued.
If you are a family whose home language is not English and ever need any support, guidance or information please do not hesitate to contact me. Please ask at reception or e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org
